A trial of a sniper who allegedly shot immigrants has begun in Sweden. The 40-year-old Peter Mangs who is known as “Laser Man” killed people of non-Swedish appearance and migrants. He is accused of three counts of murder and 12 counts of attempted murder.

The killer of migrants cannot be described as a follower of the Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik. Legal proceedings against him are now underway in that country. Prosecutors believe that Peter Mangs committed the first two murders in 2003 and later, he carried out a dozen attacks on people in 2009-2010. One of those who suffered at the hands of Mangs was a Swedish woman who was with a group of immigrants during the attack. Peter Mangs does not repent for what he has done. In fact, Breivik described him and several neo-Nazis as true patriots who took up arms to defend Europe from the policy of multiculturalism. This policy has led to open borders and uncontrolled illegal immigration and triggered a right-wing radical response, says Dr. Irina Semenenko.

“This is a terrible response. This is radicalization, which is in line with the discontent of a significant number of people over the fact that their heritage, infrastructure, and what their ancestors created, are being used by migrants. There are no recipes. It cannot be resolved using police methods because radicals will always find ways to bypass the police. In view of this, today’s task is how to form a civil nation,” Irina Semenenko said.

According to her, a civil nation is deprived of ethnic prejudices and should feel relationships based on citizenship rather than nationality.

Sweden was perceived in Europe as a model for a migration policy, but a misbalance was triggered when it joined the Schengen zone. This led to an end of migration tolerance which according to sociologists, is 13 percent of migrants of the total residents, says Russian historian and political scientist Oleg Barabanov.

“The threshold of tolerance has been surpassed also in the countries where migrants have always lived. These countries are France and Britain. The situation in other countries, including Sweden and Norway has changed as they joined the Schengen zone because this opened the internal borders across Europe. As a result, the migrants who entered the European Union through France, Italy or some other country moved further north and exceeded the threshold of migrant tolerance of these countries,” Oleg Barabanov said.

Europe has driven itself to a desperate situation, says Barabanov. Since there is no solution to the problem, the risk of new “snipers” appearing is fairly high in Europe.

“Understandably, the serial killings in Sweden are even more linked to interethnic relations in Europe, than the mass murders by Breivik in Norway. These relations are worsening. At the same time, we see that the worsening economic crisis has hit social stability in Europe. Consequently, many people have lost their jobs or confidence in stable economic existence. As a result, people have started accusing migrants. Unfortunately, such incidents will occur in the future,” Oleg Barabanov added.
