PARKLAND, Fla. (WSVN) -- A week after federal investigators began scrutinizing the charred ruin of a Miami Beach synagogue, another group of South Florida Jewish worshippers has been left reeling after their temple was targeted by hate criminals.

Sometime Wednesday, vandals spray-painted swastikas on the outside of the building and even went as far as spraying "Hitler" on a stop sign nearby. Police are now looking into if the defacing of this temple is related to a synagogue fire in Miami Beach last week.

Thursday happens to be a day designated for remembering the lives lost and the pain caused by the unbridled hatred of the Holocaust. Now, on that significant day, those of the Jewish faith are working to heal fresh wounds inflicted by that same hatred. "I just finished learning about the holocaust in school, and it's so weird that this happened right after," said Jennifer Suissa.

Beginning Wednesday, at sundown, Yome Hashoah is supposed to be the time to memorialize the millions killed in the Holocaust. It was nearly 70 years ago when Regina Selig fled Nazis bearing this same symbol. "I try not to think about it a whole lot," she said.

For her to see the swastikas on this temple brings back the trauma, and she wonders where the hatred comes from. "The people who do this, where did they learn to do this? Did they learn it from their homes? I imagine a lot did," Selig said.

Still, the worshippers at the synagogue refuse to let the malevolence outside seep through their temple's walls, and Rabbi Yosef Biston looks beyond the hate, only responding with love. "In place of hate, we love," he told the faithful. "In place of bigotry, we have tolerance, and in place of ignorance, we fill that void with knowledge."

There's a $1,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest in this case. If you have any information on this hate crime, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for that reward.
