Mayor Ted Wheeler confronted, reportedly punched while dining in NW Portland

A group of people raucously confronted Mayor Ted Wheeler while he was dining in Northwest Portland on Wednesday.

A video clip of the encounter shows a small group confronting and yelling at Wheeler inside a tent set up for outdoor dining. Portland police reported one person punched Wheeler in the shoulder.

Wheeler wasn’t hurt in the incident, which happened on Kearney Street near 19th Avenue, according to police.

The reported punch wasn’t captured in the video clips, though Wheeler can be heard claiming someone assaulted him.

“You are going to be made to feel like the scum you are,” one person yelled at Wheeler during the confrontation, which was first reported by Oregon Public Broadcasting.

No one has been arrested, and an investigation is underway.
