Mike Pence unexpectedly cancels N.H. event

Vice President Mike Pence has unexpectedly canceled a planned appearance in Salem, N.H.

Pence was set to speak Tuesday afternoon at the Granite Recovery Center.
“Something came up that required the @VP to remain in Washington, DC. It’s no cause for alarm. He looks forward to rescheduling the trip to New Hampshire very soon,” Alyssa Farah, the vice president’s press secretary, tweeted at 11:58 a.m. Tuesday.

Farah tweeted at 12:55 p.m. that Pence “never left Washington, D.C. There was no ‘emergency callback.’ Something came up that required the VP to stay in DC. We’ll reschedule NH shortly.”

One senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the situation, said the issue was not related to national security. Another senior administration official said it was not related to any kind of health issue affecting Pence or President Trump.

Soon after boarding a plane at Joint Base Andrews, just outside Washington, Pence got back off and returned to the White House, said his chief of staff, Marc Short, who was with the vice president.

“The plane never took off,” Short said. “It was never diverted. It was never turned back around.”

Tom Mountain, a Massachusetts GOP committeeman, was in the room at the New Hampshire facility where Pence was to appear.

He said earlier Monday, before the statements by Pence’s press secretary and chief of staff, that a Secret Service official had told those attending that President Trump had ordered Pence back to Washington just as his flight was about to land.

Pence was set to deliver remarks at 1 p.m. After the event was canceled, scores of attendees spilled out of the meeting room at the recovery center.
“We were so honored to host Vice President Pence to discuss the opioid epidemic, treatment, and recovery but unfortunately the event was canceled,” Eric Spofford, chief executive of the Granite Recovery Centers, said in an e-mail.
