Those roasts are nasty affairs. They basically take symbolic dumps on the subject in question, much like a ritual murder except without the actual death of the roastee.

exactly, the idea that programming is ratings driven is an absolute comical farce. the advertisers don't give a shit about selling you products, they are indoctrinating you with racial propoganda. The whole endless debate about the economy is a red herring.

In a bygone era, the Friar's Club roasts were a closed trade affair for comedians where they could let off some steam and be as nasty as they wanna be. The roasters had a relationship with the roastee (friends or at least collegues). A decade or two ago they started broadcasting them. One made the news when Ted Danson showed up at Whoopie Goldberg's roast in blackface. Since he was banging her at the time, no racial animosity was intended. I don't think that I've watched/heard any of them until the Shatner roast.

The Shatner roast appears not to be from the famous Friar's Club but some Comedy Central event. Shatner is not a comedian and only a few of his collegues from various shows were involved. It included a bunch of lame "cutting edge" comics I've never heard of (except for Andy Dick) and who Shatner would probably never have recognized if they had passed in the street. What began as closed in-trade event is now held for commercial purposes. A friend who follows Star Trek news says that Shatner hated the roast and I don't blame him. It is one thing to take abuse from friends and collegues and another thing from strangers. While there were some laughs, overall the event was stupid. I taped it and misjudged the length of the show, so I missed part of it. I would have liked to have heard Shatner's rebuttel.

I think George Takai came out solely so that he could be on the show. Without the gay jokes, what could they have said about him? I have no idea what he's been doing for the last 40 years other than getting Star Trek residual checks and trying to promote his own series/movie where he is a star ship captain.
