Ex-NBA Player Baxter Arrested After Gunshots Near White House

Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Former National Basketball Association player Lonny Baxter was arrested by Secret Service agents earlier today after reports of shots fired about two blocks from the White House.
Baxter, 27, was taken into custody about 2:30 a.m. after a person on the street told a nearby agent that shots were being fired from a white sport utility vehicle, Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said.
Baxter, who played with the Charlotte Bobcats last season, was driving the vehicle. The officers found used shell casings and a handgun inside the car, Zahren said.
The Secret Service charged Baxter and a companion, Irvin Martin, with carrying a pistol without a license and other firearms charges, Zahren said. The two are being held by District of Columbia police pending a hearing.
It wasn't immediately clear why they were firing the gun, Zahren said. The two could face additional charges pending an investigation.
Baxter was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the second round of the 2002 NBA draft after a college career at Maryland. He has also played for Toronto, Washington and Houston during his career.
