`Battle Dance' Turns Deadly
May 9, 2007
By By MATT BURGARD And HILDA MUÑOZ, Courant Staff Writers

NEW BRITAIN -- The sun had just set on a warm spring day, and Robert Stitt was hanging out with some old friends in an empty parking lot on North Street. James Brown was on the boom box, and Stitt had a few drinks in his belly when someone challenged him to see who could pull off the most difficult dance maneuvers.

"He was a pretty good dancer. Back in the day he used to do flips," said John Boxley, a friend of Stitt's who was among the crowd who watched the "battle dance" unfold Monday night. "It was a bunch of older guys dancing who thought they were still young."

When someone in the crowd pulled off a body flip, Stitt took off his shirt and decided to try it himself, Boxley said. He said the crowd of about 20 friends began chanting his name, egging him on.

"That amped him up a little bit," Boxley said.

But Stitt was no longer the young athletic man who graduated from New Britain High School 30 years ago. Now 48, he sprung up and pointed his head and shoulders toward the ground, police said.

Stitt hit the pavement face first. (Comment By Omega Man: LOL! :D )

Boxley and others in the group rushed to his aid, and Boxley heard Stitt take three labored breaths. Soon, an ambulance arrived to take Stitt to the hospital.

Stitt was pronounced dead later Monday night. Police said the death appears accidental and most probably alcohol-related. An autopsy is being conducted.

Stitt's sister, Sharon Stitt, said Tuesday that he was not someone who regularly took part in "battle dances," which is the term that Boxley and city police used to describe the competition. She said he probably had too much to drink and decided to see if he could still pull the dance moves of his youth.

"It's not something he did on a regular basis, at least as far as I know," she said.

Boxley said the competition was spontaneous, not a regular activity that he and his friends take part in. The term "battle dance," he said, was meant to convey the competitive nature of the dancing.

The term is also used across the country, including in Mexican Cinco de Mayo celebrations and among teenagers in Los Angeles and other cities.

Stitt's older brother, Rodney Johnson, said Stitt was a "big-hearted" man who liked to have a good time and was known for his generosity.

"He would give you the shirt off his back if he liked you," Johnson said. "I think he sometimes tried to live like he was still in his 20s, but that was the way he was."

City police said the lot where the dance competition took place is a popular place for people to gather at night to drink and play music.
