Amazing, make a deal with a jew and 60 years later their grandkids will crawl out of the woodwork and lie thru their teeth to claim they were defrauded.
Toledo, OH - The heirs of a German-Jewish woman from the Nazi era have dropped their claims to ownership of a pair of paintings housed in art museums, the two museums said.
The heirs of Martha Nathan filed motions challenging the ownership of Vincent van Gogh's "Les Becheurs," which is owned by the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Paul Gauguin's "Street Scene in Tahiti," housed at the Toledo Museum of Art.
In 2004, descendants of Nathan's siblings and in-laws approached the two museums claiming, that the works had been sold under duress. But after research, the museums determined that Nathan, sold the paintings voluntarily. He sold the Van Gogh to a consortium of three Jewish art dealers in Paris in 1938 for $9,360. One of the dealers sold the picture for $34,000 in 1941 to Tannahill. So now the heirs have dropped their claims to ownership.
"We are pleased that the issue has been resolved in the best interest of the museum and the public," DIA Director Graham Beal said in a statement.
The paintings will remain on view at each museum with continued acknowledgment of Nathan's prior ownership from 1922-1938, the museums said. [AP]
