Blair accused of racism for not apologising for slave trade

Prime Minister Tony Blair Monday was denounced as a "white supremacist racist" after refusing to apologise for Britain's role in the slave trade.

In an article for the New Nation newspaper, Blair said Britain's role in the slave trade 200 years ago was "profoundly shameful" and that he felt "deep sorrow" but stop short of issuing a full apology.

"It's hard to believe that what would now be a crime against humanity was legal at the time," Blair said.

"I believe that the bicentenary offers us a chance to express our deep sorrow that it ever happened, that it could ever have happened." But Black campaign groups denounced his words of regret ahead of next year's 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, saying his comments were "Eurocentric" and a "falsification of the truth." "Everything that Tony Blair said smacks of white supremacist racism," said Kofi Mawuli Klu, joint coordinator of Rendezvous of Victory.

His reference to the chattel enslavement of Africans as "legal" assumes that the British legal system was the only system in the world, Klu said.

"Whatever form of slavery that existed in Africa at the time did not deny the humanity of people. The kind of slavery that they took to Africa was illegal in Africa," he told Black Britain daily newspaper.

But Culture Minister David Lammy defended the British premier, who he said "did not want to get into a blame fest" but wanted next year's events to celebrate the people who abolished the trade and commemorate those who died.

"Tony Blair has gone further than any other leader of any western democracy," Lammy said. "He has struck the right balance between providing for the future, commemorating the past and moving forward as a multi-ethnic nation," he said.

Black campaign groups, including the Global Justice Forum, have been also demanding reparations and radical changes to society that will end modern enslavement and colonisation of all oppressed peoples throughout the world.

Forum spokesperson Stuart Hodkinson, told Black Britain that the anniversary offers an opportunity to talk about and explore the legacies and continued horrors of enslavement today.

"It is remarkable that the British government is trying to draw some kind of line between now and then as if the power of the British state and its corporations has almost no connection with the Transatlantic Slave Trade," Hodkinson said.
