Black biker club says DeLand ban on event racist

DELAND -- City leaders have banned the Elite Bikers Club annual "Ride What You Brung" event from DeLand Municipal Airport.
It's a move that has members of the local black motorcycle club saying they are being unfairly picked on because of the color of their skin.
"It's been one nitpicking racial thing after the other," said coordinator Adam Thomas. "That's all it's about."
Thomas said for as long as he could remember the city has found fault with just about everything from how they set up the races to use of alcohol in order to get rid of them.
At the same time, city leaders said after years of talking to event organizers about gambling, drinking, careless driving and general event safety concerns, they had no other choice but to deny a permit for the event next year, in essence banning it from the airport.
"Cooperative compliance is what we would like," said DeLand's Deputy Police Chief Randel Henderson. "We have tried for years."
The 1/4-mile drag races are held at least twice a year during Bike Week and Biketoberfest. The group started out as a social club in 1996. It has since grown into a nonprofit organization, according to its Web site, which late last week continued to promote a 2008 Bike Week event at the airport.
The event, which is held on an abandoned strip off Marsh Road near the Sperling Sports Complex, brings in anywhere between 3,000 to 30,000 people, according to police estimates.
Police reports show a disorganized event dating back to 2002, and in 2005, officials had threatened to cancel the event. It was allowed to continue at the urging of Police Chief Ed Overman, but the group was told to make a few changes.
The club was asked to designate spectator areas, ban four wheelers and dirt bikes, post no alcohol and no gambling signs and limit the age of participants.
Henderson said his officers have noticed children as young as 3 participating in the event, and as the crowds grew, so did problems such as gambling and drinking.
Thomas said the club has complied with the city's request, and even paid $5,000 to hire city police officers for security.
The group doesn't sell alcohol, though some participants ignore the rules and bring their own, Thomas said. He added that other sanctioned events throughout the city allow alcohol sales.
"Now they pinpoint, we can't have alcohol," Thomas said. "This is just another way for them to find a way to stop us."
Henderson said other events are allowed to have alcohol because that was discussed as part of their permit, and alcohol use is limited to certain areas. As far as he knows, alcohol was never part of the Elite Biker's Club permit, he said.
Assistant City Manager Michael Pleus said the group has been given every opportunity to make corrections.
"I think they have tried but they couldn't get a hold of it," Pleus said. "(The city) has an obligation, and we can't take any undue liability with the safety protocols and fights breaking out. It was a difficult call. We don't like turning down event handlers."
Thomas disagreed. "They just started going through what they could find to get us from there," he said.
