Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyp Erdogan said that he would not allow anti-Semitism to take hold in his country.

According to agencies' reports, Erdogan said on Tuesday his government remains committed to mediating a peace deal between Israel and Palestinians.

Last week, Erdogan stormed out of a debate on Gaza at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Turkish premier reacted angrily after he was refused the chance to respond to Israeli President Shimon Peres’ impassioned defense of the campaign in Gaza.

However, he asserted that criticizing Israel should not be misinterpreted as anti-Semitism.

“There has never been anti-Semitism in the history of this country… The people of this country have never seen the Jews as enemies,” Erdogan told a parliamentary group meeting of his Justice and Development Party.

“And I believe there will not be any from now on. Nothing of this sort can happen under our government.”

Turkish PM underlined that his country guarantees the rights and safety of its Jewish community.
