Michael Bisping shook up the world by knocking out UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in the first round in Los Angeles to become the first UFC champion from Britain.

It was testament to the fighter's attitude of staying fit and never giving up. Grit and determination carried Bisping to the 185lb crown.

"I was fighting from the day I was born," he said. "It was the only thing I was good at. I'm just an ordinary guy, and I want to thank my family for supporting me. Without them I couldn't have done this. Nor could I without the support of the British fans."

Bisping came into the fight on just 17 days notice after an injury to former champion Chris Weidman, who was due to contest the title in a rematch with Rockhold. There were also injuries and suspensions to two higher ranked contenders.

Bisping had the gold belt around his waist after three minutes and thirty-six seconds of the first round, landing a left counter over the top, which rocked the defending champion. Bisping followed up with another left which propelled the American onto the Octagon wall, out on his feet.
