UN expert tells US gov't to fight racial profiling

Jun. 5, 2009

The United Nations' top racism investigator said that Washington needs to step up the fight against racial profiling.

Mithu Muigai said in a 29-page report that law enforcement was responsible for the "most pronounced" racism now practiced in the United States.

He said that the Constitution clearly prohibits racial profiling, but evidence such as arrest and search rates shows a wide disparity between whites and nonwhites. He said that state governments need to do more, too.

Muigai is a Kenyan lawyer who reports to the UN Human Rights Council. He will present his report to the 47-nation body June 16.
