University of Alabama faculty say laws targeting critical race theory are ‘existential threat’

Oct 20, 2021

University of Alabama faculty debated how to handle legislative efforts that could impact discussions of race, equity and critical race theory Thursday.

During a regular meeting of the Faculty Senate, a group that represents professors and has some power over curriculum and instructional decisions, several people voiced concerns about a recent state resolution that affects K-12 classrooms, and possible legislation that could also impact higher education.

“This is an existential threat to everyone in the room,” said John Petrovic, an education professor, of bills prefiled in the Alabama legislature. To wait until legislation passes to make a statement, he said, would be “cowardice bullshit.”
