Vandals educated about hate crime
Teens plead guilty to burglary

Monticello - An education program for teenagers who vandalized an Orthodox Jewish bungalow colony has paid off.

In September, Dominick DePrizio, Anthony Wingert and Raymond Surerus broke into the synagogue at White Rock, an Orthodox Jewish bungalow colony on Southwoods Drive. They spray-painted swastikas and Hitler's name on furnishings. They blotted out the faces of rabbis on old photos.

Over the summer, their friend, Daniel Price, sprayed fire extinguishers around the grounds.

All four teenagers were charged initially with hate crimes, which meant they faced mandatory prison sentences of at least 3½ years.

District Attorney Steve Lungen hit upon the idea of sending the kids through a religious education program. White Rock's owners and the defense lawyers agreed, and Judge Frank LaBuda approved the program.

"I told them, if you want to get them out of (the hate crime), this is what they have to do," Lungen said. "You've sometimes got to try something a little different, a little novel."

Three of the Monticello teenagers - Wingert and Surerus, both 18, and Price, 17 - took a week-long seminar with lectures and readings, led by a Sullivan County Community College professor. They met with a rabbi. They learned why swastikas are so repugnant to the Jewish people. They learned about persecution, and Hitler, and about how the Holocaust came to pass. (next time, just send them to VNNF)

Mark Sherman, Wingert's lawyer, said his client appreciates what the course offered him. "He understands the significance not only of what he did, but also of this opportunity," Sherman said.

Dominick DePrizio, 17, was jailed for violating probation on an unrelated burglary, and wasn't able to participate. Because DePrizio didn't have that choice, Lungen said, it wouldn't have been fair to pursue the hate crime against him alone.

DePrizio and Wingert, 18, pleaded guilty yesterday in Sullivan County Court to third-degree burglary, a felony. Price, 17, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal mischief, a felony.

The fourth defendant in the case, Raymond Surerus, 18, will plead guilty today to burglary.

"Punishment without rehabilitation, punishment without caring and concern isn't justice. It doesn't do the community any good," LaBuda told the teens.

In exchange for their pleas, the four will face incarceration. Price will get six months in jail and five years of probation. Wingert and Surerus will get one to three years in prison. DePrizio will get two to six years in prison, which will run concurrently with the 1 to four years he will get for the probation violation. Wingert, Price and Surerus will be treated as youthful offenders; their convictions will be sealed after they're sentenced on June 8.

Wingert, Surerus and Price are free pending sentencing. DePrizio, who tested positive for marijuana use, is in jail.

Wingert - is that not a version of Weingart? Could these kids possibly be of jewish orangutang???

Apparently these were rich white kids. They were caught due to a Jewish informer who regularly kept the police tipped on "kids who throw firecrackers" etc.

Fighting hate with learning

Monticello - The four boys live within about a mile of each other in Southwoods. Daniel Price and Dominick DePrizio, both 17, and Anthony Wingert and Raymond Surerus, both 18, rode the school bus together and were in some of the same classes.

Price has been into motocross for seven years. He painted fences for a local horse farm, worked at a local greenhouse. He wants to go to college for computer technology.

On Oct. 11, police showed up at his family's door, saying they wanted to ask more questions about the other kids, who'd been busted a week earlier.

As soon as Price stepped outside, police arrested him. He spent the next week in the Sullivan County Jail. His parents, Richard and Ellen Price, agonized, moving from disbelief to heartbreak. They had taught their kids not to hate.

Ellen Price said, "We've been through cancer, we've been through seizures, we've been through our (older) son shattering his leg, we've been through deaths. This has to be absolutely the worst thing we've been through in 31 years."
Not far away, on Southwoods Drive, the White Rock Bungalow Colony had been vandalized.

In September, swastikas and Hitler's name had been spray-painted in the synagogue at the Orthodox Jewish colony. [Imagine what a white colony would rate from the jews!] Spray paint obscured the faces of revered rabbis in old photographs and marred the spines [cosmetic damage] of the Talmud and the Bible. In June, vandals had sprayed fire extinguishers all over the grounds. Firecrackers were flung at frightened residents.

DePrizio, Wingert and Surerus were arrested in the synagogue desecration. Price was charged in the fire extinguisher mess. All four face felony charges of burglary as a hate crime.

For the past few years, White Rock owner Shoshana Mermelstein has given police lists of problem kids.

"We're talking about a couple of years now with slashed tires and paint thrown into cars and firecrackers thrown through bungalow windows," she said. The desecration was just the most recent and the worst of the harassment.

"Every time I think of it, I feel the chills going down my spine again "¦ . It was such a painful incident."

Court records show that throwing firecrackers was part of the burglary charge against Price. He wasn't part of the synagogue desecration.

Price says they didn't fully understand what swastikas and Hitler mean to the Jewish people.

But they knew the words and the acts and that name were hurtful. They knew it was wrong.

How could they not?

How do you extinguish hate?

In a grand experiment, designed specifically for the boys involved in this case, the answer is: education. Judge Frank LaBuda, District Attorney Steve Lungen and the defense lawyers - Mike McGuire, Joel Proyect, and Mark Sherman - worked out this seminar with Anthony "Frank" Conneely, Sullivan County Community College professor emeritus, and Rabbi Shlomo Rothenberg of Mountaindale.

The teenagers will still be convicted of felonies, Lungen said, and they'll still get jail time. This class isn't meant to absolve them of guilt, nor to say there, there, everything's all better.

The purpose is to teach, to enlighten, to try something novel and constructive. [BRAINWASHING TIME!]

"Somewhere along the line, a chain has to be broken," Lungen says. "I said, let's take a different approach," have the boys meet with rabbis and really learn something. "And maybe - maybe - we'll give them some sort of a break." [???]

Did they truly not understand that swastikas and Hitler's name and birthday represent 6 million horrible deaths? That's the crux of a hate-crime charge, [is it really?] and a hate-crime designation enhances the penalties of a crime. Either way, Lungen said, there needs to be more than jail here, to demonstrate why these things aren't just graffiti and why they are so hurtful.

"We've never done it before, and let's see how it works. Maybe some good will come of this," he said.

"It was a real eye-opener," Daniel Price says soberly, quietly, as he sits in a dress shirt and tie at his lawyer's office with his parents. "This class is something that should be taught in high school.

"I realized that no matter what, we're all human beings. We all live on the same planet, all breathe the same air. No matter what race or religion, we're all human beings." ["INSTALLATION COMPLETE "- BEEP!]

Proyect and Sherman declined comment on behalf of their clients, Surerus and Wingert. So did Stephan Schick, DePrizio's lawyer. DePrizio, who was on probation for a burglary conviction, just bailed out of jail last week. He wasn't able to take the class.

Price says this class was a great opportunity, and he's grateful that the judge and prosecutor allowed it.

These kids aren't skinheads, says McGuire. "These were just four kids that didn't have any idea of the nature and history and consequences of what they did. We can't just take every 17-year-old knucklehead and throw them in jail for life.
"There is no program for felony stupidity."

The course was 30 hours of classroom instruction by Conneely at SCCC, hundreds of pages of reading and some relevant movies.

"This was the same as if they took a two-credit course, Conneely said. He taught them how the Jews were persecuted by the Romans and driven from their homeland, the Exodus from Egypt, how they were demonized in the Dark Ages, and how they were murdered by the millions in Russian pogroms in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He taught them about the rise of the Third Reich and the Holocaust.

"In Europe," Conneely explained, "anti-Semitism has always been. It's not something new."

And after World War I and the Treaty of Versailles, the German people, beset in the 1920s by postwar chaos and a collapsed economy, looked for someone to blame.

"They blamed Jews," Conneely said. Adolph Hitler's "Mein Kampf" was in part dedicated to building a case against Jews, and when he became chancellor in 1933, he passed laws that codified discrimination. The Holocaust came later.

Conneely showed them this pernicious path, showed them death camps in Poland, showed them the horror.

"In school," Price says, "they teach you more about American involvement. They don't teach you about the history and Hitler's rise to power." [WHAT SCHOOL IS THIS?!?]

The seminar and the meetings with a rabbi showed them the missing pieces, showed them persecution in context.

"They've always been used as scapegoats," Price says. "They (the Romans) blamed bad weather on the Jewish people." [BEEP! WHHHRRR! CLICK]

This new knowledge has changed his outlook on life, Price says.

"If they didn't give you the opportunity to do the program, and just sent you to jail," Ellen Price tells him, "that would be your life."

"A felony haunts you," her son adds. [LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME, EH, THAT'S A NEW ONE!]

Conneely says the kids paid attention, read the assignments, showed up early for class, asked questions.

"I know they learned something from this. I said to them, 'Do you realize now what you did?'" Conneely said.

They told him yes, and that they did what they did because they were bored. Get a job, he told them. "Do something of consequence."

They might not have realized before how offensive their actions were, Conneely said, but they know now, at great cost. What they learned might have no effect on what happens when they go back to court on Wednesday.

Shoshanna Mermelstein hopes the learning is real.

"I hope it's not in vain," she said. "I hope it is a lesson."

Shows that a week long jew-camp is an equal punishment to 3.5 years in a nigger infested prison.

Sounds about right.

I'm guessing that Der Ewige Jude wasn't one of the movies. :)

Vandal sentenced

By Heather Yakin
Times Herald-Record
hyakin@th-record.com

Monticello - Raymond Surerus looked solemn and calm as he was sentenced to prison yesterday for his role in vandalizing a bungalow colony synagogue last fall, in a case that was initially charged as a hate crime.

But his mother's sobs filled the Sullivan County courtroom.

In September, Surerus, 18, and his friends Dominick DePrizio, 17, and Anthony Wingert, 18, broke into the synagogue at White Rock, an Orthodox Jewish bungalow colony on Southwoods Drive in Monticello. They spray-painted swastikas and Hitler's name and sprayed paint on holy books. A fourth friend, 17-year-old Daniel Price, sprayed fire extinguishers all over the colony over the summer.

"I'm just sorry for what I did," Surerus said yesterday.

Prosecutors, the court and the defense came up with a unique approach to the case, in which all four teens were originally charged with burglary as a hate crime. Surerus, Price and Wingert attended a weeklong, intensive seminar at Sullivan County Community College on the origins of anti-Semitism and the history of the Jewish people. They performed community service and met several times with a rabbi for counseling. The teenagers were allowed to plead guilty to third-degree burglary without the hate-crime designation that could have meant stiffer sentences.

"I think you and the other young men have all learned what a hate crime is all about," Judge Frank LaBuda told Surerus. "The system of justice has given you the opportunity to make amends. I think you've done that."

Surerus was sentenced to one to three years in prison, with a recommendation for shock incarceration, a boot-camp-style program that could have him free again in six to eight months.

DePrizio, who was on felony probation at the time of the synagogue vandalism, was sentenced May 26 to two to six years in prison. Wingert will be sentenced today, and Price tomorrow.
