Owusu Takes Deal in School Sex Charges

Burlington, Vermont - September 3, 2009

A teenager accused of sexually assaulting girls at South Burlington High School will spend 90 days in jail.

Police say 18-year-old Isaac Owusu had sex with two underage girls near the boys' locker room. He pleaded guilty Thursday to lewd and lascivious conduct and prohibited acts. After serving his three-month sentence, Owusu will have the opportunity to have his record expunged if he stays out of trouble.

Owusu was also accused of urging underage girls to send him nude photos and videos of themselves. It's called sexting and the case spurred new legislation to keep teens from facing serious sex crime charges.

"Well the law that was passed by the Legislature essentially decriminalizing what is commonly referred to as sexting because it mandates it into juvenile court. So, it's no longer a criminal case, it's now a delinquent case," Chittenden County Prosecutor T.J. Donovan explained.

In accord with the law, Donovan dropped the sexting charges against Owusu, but he says the sexual assault charges were always the main focus of the prosecution.
