Investigation Continues At Site Of Fatal Fire

KIRKLAND - A soldier has been sent home from Iraq after his wife, their two children and his wife's sister died in a fire that gutted the family's home in this suburb east of Seattle. Sgt. Leonid Milkin, 29, was told of the fire in the home he bought in October 2003 with his wife, Olga, 28, and was returning to the state, most likely on an emergency leave, Maj. Philip Osterli of the Washington National Guard said Tuesday.
"It's a tragedy," Osterli said. "We have a family program system ready to receive him and offer any support we can."
Milkin is a member of the 341st Military Intelligence Battalion, most of which is in Afghanistan, but has been on special assignment in Baghdad since September and is currently assigned to the 415th Military Intelligence Battalion, Osterli said.
Army officials at Fort Lewis were helping the National Guard coordinate a grant for funeral expenses, Osterli said.
The names of those who died were not officially released, but the soldier's father, Pavel Milkin of Mill Creek, said Tuesday they were Olga Milkin; her sister, Lyuba Botvin, 24, who also lived in the house, and the couple's two sons, Justin Milkin, 5, and Andrew Milkin, 3.
Neighbors reported the fire at the Kirkland home late Monday morning, and none of those who died had a chance to escape, fire officials said.
The bodies were all found on the second floor, Fire Marshal Grace Steuart said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. Steuart said there was nothing at first impression to indicate foul play.
"The house is so badly damaged that it's hard to tell if there were smoke detectors," she added. "Even if there were, I'm not sure if we'll be able to tell, at this juncture, whether they were in working order."
As dozens of friends and relatives brought flowers and placed a white wooden cross in a makeshift shrine at the scene Tuesday, the soldier's grieving father said he didn't understand why all four apparently were in their upstairs bedrooms.
"It's strange," the elder Milkin said. "No one would be asleep at that time of day. The kids spend a lot of time in our house and we know their schedule, and we know for sure what time they go to sleep."
He said his family is of Russian origin, moving from Ukraine and to Estonia and then to the United States in 1989 through a sponsor in Everett. He found work as a welder, and the family lived in an apartment before moving to Mill Creek, he said.
The couple met at a Pentecostal church, married seven years ago and lived with the father in Mill Creek home before buying the Kirkland house about three years ago, he said.
Milkin said his son and daughter-in-law were fixing up the house, which was built in 1914.

You sit there on some high horse and pass a moral judgement on them and refuse to understand that many of them may believe they are doing the right and honorable thing. You judge them based on your refusal to understand this and therefore on your mindset instead of theirs.

There is something in this whole blame and hate the soldiers thing that reminds me of the vietnam era and hippies.

Soldier Whose Family Was Slain Returns

The six-foot, 215-pound Schierman moved in across the street from the Milkins earlier this month.

Schierman had worked the past year and a half doing maintenance for Carillon Properties, an upscale collection of offices, shops, a hotel and a marina on Lake Washington.
