Shots were fired and a police van was set alight by angry white farmers who stormed a South African courthouse today to avenge the torture and murder of a young farm manager.

Police used stun grenades to disperse the crowd, many carrying placards reading Boer Lives Matter, as some tried to force their way into cells holding the alleged killers of Brendin Horner, 21.

The discovery of his bloodied body, which had been strung up on a post at the farm he managed, has triggered anger in rural areas. He had been stabbed multiple times and severely beaten before being strangled, according to reports from Free State province.

Hundreds of farmers, some of them in tractors and others who had driven overnight across the country,
