Mass fight involving Turks reported in a train outside Moscow:

MOSCOW. March 11 - A mass brawl in which three allegedly suffered was reported to have taken place in a commuter train outside Moscow.

The brawl erupted near the Frezer station as the train was traveling from the region to Moscow's Kazansky railway terminal, a source in law enforcement services told Interfax.

Three passengers were reportedly injured in the fight. Fifteen young men have been detained at the Kazansky railway terminal on suspicion of initiating the fight. They are being questioned.

The victims are reportedly Turkish citizens. All of them have been hospitalized.... [story unexpectedly cropped]

Bill Weinberg reports on the rise of racially-motivated violence in Russia. Break it down for us "Bill", explain to us about this worrying trend:

PETROZAVODSK — One man was killed in a brawl between locals and migrants from the Caucasus in northwestern Russia in the early hours of Friday, local police said.

A 19-year-old local man was stabbed in the throat in a fight over a girl following a dance party in the village of Kuitezha in the Republic of Karelia. He died before an ambulance arrived, police said.

The suspects, who fled the scene in a car, were seized within an hour of the killing.

Police said they were taking measures to deter racial violence similar to a wave of protests and rioting that followed a restaurant brawl with Chechens in the Karelian town of Kondopoga last September, in which two local residents were killed and five others injured.

A total of 109 people were detained in the city on suspicion of involvement in rioting and arson attacks following the murders, and 25 rioters were later charged. At the time, the local community accused authorities of failing to protect them or safeguard their interests, and of taking bribes from criminal immigrant groups. [Clean up this corruption. The incident also sparked a wave of nationalist protests elsewhere in the country, prompting the Russian government to pass a restrictive immigration law in late 2006.

Police said the fight in the village was not racially motivated, but given developments in Kondopoga, the local police force was being reinforced to mediate between villagers and Caucasus migrants.

In September a pogrom took place in the town of Kondopoga, in the Karelia district. After a fight in a bar between ethnic Russians and immigrants from the Caucasus in which two Russians died, Russian mobs gathered, ordering all "blacks" to leave town within 24 hours. Violent rioting then commenced, in which young neo-Nazis from out of the area also participated. Police waited three days to intervene.

Kondopoga Witnesses Disappear
A Chechen Ingush leader said Monday that police had forced two Azeri witnesses to leave the northwestern town of Kondopoga to prevent them from testifying on a brawl that sparked deadly inter-ethnic riots.

The two men are among the main witnesses in an investigation into a fight that broke out in a restaurant in Kondopoga last September between ethnic Russians and Chechens, triggering mass street disturbances.

Third foreigner attacked in Voronezh in last 48 hours

VORONEZH, March 11 (RIA Novosti) - A Yemeni student was attacked in the city of Voronezh in European Russia in an apparently racially motivated assault, a senior aide to the regional prosecutor said Sunday.

Abdus Saleh, a second-year student at the history department of the Voronezh State University, was beaten by unidentified persons on the night of March 10-11 in a third attack on foreigners in the city in the last forty-eight hours, the aide said.

The student with a fractured arm was taken to the regional hospital. A criminal investigation has been opened into the incident, the aide said.

On Saturday, Voronezh prosecutors opened a criminal case into an attack on a Nigerian citizen. The same day, prosecutors launched a criminal investigation into the beating of an Iraqi student, the aide said.

A popular destination for foreign undergraduates about 310 miles south of Moscow, Voronezh has recently come to the spotlight as a center of racially motivated crimes.

In October 2005, an Albanian national studying at Voronezh University told police he was beaten up near his dormitory and had his mobile phone and ID card stolen. In January, two men from Sudan were allegedly assaulted at one of the city's bus stops, but reportedly sustained no serious injuries.

A group of teenagers attacked a Vietnamese national, who lived in the town of Ostrogozhsk near Voronezh, last April. He was hospitalized and died of the sustained injuries a few days later.

A surge in violence targeting foreigners with non-Slavic features has prompted Russian and foreign human rights groups in recent months to raise concerns over the alarming spread of racist and xenophobic attitudes in the country.

The Russian Interior Ministry has said about 80% of members of extremist groups members are under 30, and most of them are based in Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Samara and Voronezh Regions.
