Victim wants to give strength to others

DENVER - A sexual assault victim says she hopes that by talking about her ordeal, it will encourage other victims to come forward.

[color="Red"]Twenty-six-year-old Sarah Martino was kidnapped and raped in Denver last year.

Friday, one of the two men who raped her will be sentenced.

Johnny Fuller, 39, is facing a minimum of 96 years in prison.

During his trial Martino chose to testify, hoping he'd be put away for life so he could never hurt another person again.

Martino now wants other victims to know they too have a choice to make a difference.

It all began on a cold winter day in January 2005, the day Sarah Martino thought her life was over.

She was walking home from work at 6:30 a.m. when two men forced her into a van and sexually assaulted her.

She convinced one of the men to let her go and four hours later, he dropped her off.

"I saw a big police officer and he ran up and he says, 'Are you Sarah?' and I said, 'Yes,' and he ran up and picked me up and carried me home," said Martino.

The two men convicted of kidnapping and raping her are Fuller and 52-year old Melvin Williams.

Martino soon learned Fuller had a long criminal record.

"After I was found, I was watching the news and they said [color="red"]52 previous convictions and he had molested a little girl, and I said he's not going do it again," she said.

Martino says that's when she decided to testify at Fuller's trial.

"I felt relieved after I got off the stand. I got my voice heard and all these people got to listen to me, and he had to sit there and listen to me," Martino said.

Fuller was found guilty on 11 counts of kidnapping and rape.

Martino says she's also sharing her story in hopes other victims will come forward too.

"I did something that not very many people can do. I made it out of a kidnapping and they weren't going let me go, they told me I was going die. And to make it out of that, I could pretty much do anything," said Martino.

Fuller's trial lasted one full week and the jury took just 45 minutes to convict him.

Melvin Williams pleaded guilty to kidnapping and rape. He's facing a minimum of 32 years in prison.

He'll be sentenced in August.

Sarah Martino says she also plans to speak at Fuller's sentencing on Friday.

Clinical Therapist, Erin Dolgan, says by talking with her attackers, Sarah made them see her as a person.

"That's very hard to do because she has to put her own trauma aside, she has to put her own anger aside, put her own feelings aside and has to put her own fear aside in order to be able and willing to say who are you?" said Dolgan.

It's a move, Dolgan says, that likely saved Sarah's life.

"What she did, really beautifully, is she just taught us that there's a way to be defensive without necessarily using physical violence. She's changing the dynamics, which is very, very impressive that she did that, and thank God that she did," said Dolgan.

Dolgan doesn't recommend a set way for every person to handle a violent situation. It's a case by case basis, she says, that people need to judge for themselves.

For Sarah, in this particular instance, Dolgan says it was the right move that spared her life.
