[Bill: I'm dead tired as I write this. Forgive its sloppy tone ...]
Late last week, Willis Carto sent me a copy of George Michael's new biography "Willis Carto and the American Far Right." Its a signed copy, and quite an expensive book ($41.25 on Overstock.com -- http://www.overstock.com/Books-Movies- Music-Games/Willis-Carto-and-the-American-Far- Right/2947123/product.html). The imprint is University Press of Florida and the author is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Virginia at Wise. Professor Michael is also, from the snide comments made in the book, a giant douche whose politics are mired in the campus radicalism of the early 1980s. Fortunately, those comments are kept to a minimum and read as if they were inserted after the fact by someone who read over the manuscript with an eye towards appeasing the ADL, so they stand out from the text and do not color it. Its a dry and academic book with a lot of footnotes written by someone who stuck to "just the facts" because he clearly had a very poor background in the ideology and personalities of the movement he was reporting on, and because of that, its a very useful reference to me. From reading it, and from knowing, and in some cases being personal friends with, about half the people mentioned in the book from the Populist Party period onward, I have come to a conclusion that, six years ago, when I first met Willis, I demurred on: Willis Carto, far from being the scam artist and huckster he has been made out to be by so many paleo-conservatives, Stormfront tea-cups, and other movement pedophiles, cowards and queers, has been the victim, since the late 1970s, of the machinations of the faileo-conservatives and racial reactionaries he tried to assist and befriend.

When I first met Willis, we talked for several hours, and he dropped a lot of stuff on me about National Socialism that I was not really prepared for, intellectually and philosophically. At the time, I withheld my opinion of him, and commented that I did not know what to make of his conflict with Mark Weber. I know Willis spent at least an hour trying to explain it to me, but the interjections about the ADL and Scientology and the rest were so confusing that it distracted from the point. Only with this book do I finally understand exactly what the two were fighting about, and only with personal experience of some of the people involved can I finally judge that Mark Weber really did rip Willis Carto off for millions of dollars, using some technical errors Willis made to legally steal as much as possible from a fortune that was intended to be transferred to Willis directly. If anything, the lesson to learn is that sometimes its better to pay your taxes than to set up a bearer share corporation in Liberia because you are a crazy conspiracy theorist tax- avoider (not Willis there, but the fruits who thought up the bearer share scatter the certifices in safe deposit boxes all over the world scheme.) I also, from continued dealings with Willis, and from the background of this book, have come to my final opinion of him, which is that he is, at his core, a dedicated National Socialist who has devoted his life, erroneously, to trying to present National Socialist ideology as an "Americanized" mainstream, and has spent more of his life in conflict with the other chameleons -- the Stormfronters, faileo-cons and Rothstein-libertarians -- in an undeclared war that he has only half-consciously fought.

There is a lot of history of Willis and his activism in the book, and a lot of things I did not know about him. He got off to the wrong start early in life by dealing with the post-World-War-II conservative movement, which at the time was both politically influential and dying, largely because the war had destroyed its ideological core -- racialism -- and its compromise with the national pathology that developed during World War II forced it into a radical pseudo-nationalism that supported our troops, hated Hitler, and thus hated everything Hitler stood for -- opposition to the Jews, racialism, et cetera -- while advocating the US conserve a society based upon a modified variant of the same basically racial worldview. The Jews smelled their weakness in the 1950s and 1960s and attacked, beating them and their "Americanized" racialism soundly, replacing it with a system based on ideological differences within the communist party. In a way, I was fortunate to enter the movement as the last remnants of that tendency -- the faileo-conservatives -- were being wiped out, in the personality of Pat Buchanan and the demise of the Reform Party. If I had grown up at a time when hating Jews and racialism were still welcome parts of major party politics, I probably would have followed Willis on that wrong turn.

Willis was extraordinarily successful in his early ventures. The first venture he lost control of was the National Youth Alliance in the late 1970s, and he lost control because of the development of the David Duke tendency, a tendency which, as I have noted, took a healthy and vibrant white activism and turned it into a giant cud munching cow for the entirety of the 1980s and 1990s. Today, we call that cow "Stormfront", but David Duke is the one who has to be held responsible.

As a summary, Duke was a National Socialist White People's Party activist who stole mailing lists and money from a variety of white organizations until he was drummed out of them, causing him to disavow the uniformed approach, denounce National Socialism, and declare himself the head of the KKK. Utilizing contacts he had made in organized crime, and operating with money provided to him by white gangsters involved in the cocaine, weapons, gambling, and prostitution trades, Duke built his Ku Klux Klan organization, eventually trashing it and replacing it with the National Association for the Advancement of White People, then EURO, and then whatever he is doing now. Duke's main thrust in the 1980s was to dismantle all of the National Socialist organizations which formed under various leaderships from the demise of the American Nazi Party and turn their members into suckers willing to hand him money. By the 1990s, he had done this, and he spent the rest of that decade sucking over two million dollars out of the movement and in to prostitutes, casinos and his own cocaine habit. For this, he went to prison this decade, and was eventually sidelined, though he continues to influence the Stormfront set.

While Duke was starting to lay the seeds of the "we're not *that* racist" white supremacist movement (the movement that now calls itself "white nationalist" or "white separatist" because it allows its members to cowardly wiggle out of personal confrontations with those who call them "racist"), the National Youth Alliance had brought into it a large number of white activists who supported George Wallace but who were not willing to endorse a "crypto- fascist" or National Socialist worldview. Because the organization Willis founded to support Wallace did not explicitly advocate for National Socialism and develop a National Socialist consciousness among its members, it attracted a number of supporters of mainstream conservatism with mildly racialist view who were able to posture and gain control of the organization. By posturing itself as a non-racist and non-anti-Jewish organization, the National Youth Alliance gave tacit approval to anti-racist views, and these non-racist white nationalists and segregationists saw the hypocrist of National Socialists running their group, turned against it, and expelled Willis -- ironically, in favor of William Pierce, who was so far off the edge that he made Willis look mild. Essentially, Pierce played a better conman than Carto and persuaded the "non-racist" racists to join his newly reformed National Alliance -- but only after a long disabilitating battle with Willis that crippled and bankrupted the National Youth Alliance as a corporation.

This is a pattern that one observes throughout Willis' life, and particularly with two other organizations: the Populist Party and the Institute for Historical Review. In both cases, allowing white activists who were too cowardly to call themselves racists and to publicly denounce the Jew allowed anti-racist infiltration and subversion that could not be effectively countered without giving up the secret, and thus led to splits and the destruction of the groups involved. The lesson: never allow someone who is not explicitly racist to join a racialist organization, never lie about your racial views, and teach recruits National Socialist and racialist ideology, rather than something designed to appeal to what you perceive as an "anti- racist" mainstream.

Where the book really started to interest me is where Willis began dealing with, first, the faileo-cons, and, second, David Duke and the Stormfront set, because the identifies of the "anti-racists" who duked (pun intended) it out with Carto will probably surprise those unfamiliar with the movement. A lot of our favorite characters at this website show up during the 1980s, involved in subverting and stealing from Willis Carto various projects he was involved in, such as the Populist Party. Jared Taylor, Sam Dickson, Sam Francis and the whole crew show up in the weirdest places, expelling Carto from organizations he founded and eventually running them into the ground. The history Mr Michael inadvertently writes starting about Chapter 14 is amazing -- and what's sometwhat amusing is that he completely misses the context and importance out of ignorance of the movement and its "scene."

In 1984, Willis Carto founded the Populist Party. He did so on a non- racist "conservative" basis advocating the ideology Willis whole-heartedly believes in, which is National Socialism stripped of its leadership principle and compromised with the decentralist and anti-government roots of the United States. Of course, mixing National Socialism with the pre-Bolshevik Freemasonry behind the US Constitution is like mixing white blood with a little bit of Jew -- you end with a flaming philo-Semitic queer like Antiwar.com's Justin Raimondo. In his heart, I think Willis knows -- and his later statements in the book confirm that he knows -- that one cannot strip National Socialism from Tradition and the need for the direct government of God in the person of his avatar. That's what Yockey was getting at when he wrote his Imperium, and what Devi stated much more clearly in her Lightning and the Sun. As Willis himself is quoted as saying:

"[Attempting to unite "the right"] was a fundamental error. I had to learn as many, many others have learned that such a noble sounding goal is impractical and impossible ... The only way [to unite white people] is to have one personality, one leader, extremely intelligent, with the right type of personality, a good speaker, a gregarious person, who can literally take over these other groups in the sense that half their membership deserts to come over to his banner. ... That's the only way to do it. Not to try to merge with other organizations. You have to steal their membership. [Hitler] didn't merge his party with anybody, but though his own abilities ... he was literally able to steal the membership ... So these organizations voted to dissolve and go into the National Socialist German Workers Party. That's what he did."

Amen to that, Brother Willis.

So Willis' Populist Party ran into trouble right from the start, when its Presidential candidate couldn't take the heat of being associated with a "racist", and his chairman, Willis K Shearer, of California's American Independent Party, expelled Carto from the organization Willis founded. Willis sued him, bankrupted him and the party, then got into bed with David Duke, who, as of 2004, was still doing business with Willis and his organization, to willis' detriment. Bo Gritz, another political pussy of the militiaman-Constitutionalist vein, got involved, but only Duke had the stomach to run as the racialist candidate Willis wanted. There's a funny reference in here to Lee Atwater denouncing Duke, which is amusing because I used to know Atwater's daughter, Sara Lee, and she was a crack addict who, last I saw her, was headed to prison for pulling a gun on some boyfriend during a domestic dispute. But I digress ...

The group had a series of new splits, mainly becuase of a personality conflict between its Chairman, Don Wassal, and Willis, with Wassal becoming "embarassed" by Willis' "racism", and ended up in the hands of (and don't these names seem familiar?) Jared Taylor, Michael Levin, Sam Francis, Kirk Lyons and Mark Koerneke -- several of the movement's favorite "non- racist" racialists. The organization still peters on as the American Nationalist Union; its members now gather regularly around the "non-racist" institutions of Stormfront and American Renaissance.

The Institute for Historical Review was the last big split in which members of the David Duke-Stormfront set played a part. Mark Weber, who is chummy with Jared Taylor, was named head of the group Willis' founded and -- I'm sure you can all guess at this point -- decided Willis was too "racist" and that he "wanted to focus on Revisionism" without any National Socialist baggage. In conjunction with, among others, Sam Dickson, Weber stole the group from Carto, along with a parent corporation, the Legion for the Survival of Freedom. One of Thomas Edison's granddaughters, Jean Edison Farrel, willed $10 million dollars to Willis Carto, who was a long time friend of the family (as Mr Michael documents, validating what Willis has said). Because she was part of the avoid taxes at all costs conspiracy nuttery, she set up a complicated money laundering scheme to transfer the money to Willis through a series of untraceable dummy corporations. These types of schemes only work when you have the reach and muscle necessary to kill anyone trusted with handling the money who screws you. If you stick to purely legal means, bearer share corporations in nations like Liberia are very dangerous and subject to legal theft, and Willis' money was legally stolen from him. Technicalities and errors in the structuring of the plot led to a judge ruling that Weber's company was the proper heir of the money, not Willis personally, and the resulting judgment bankrupted Carto and his Liberty Lobby. Ironically, in my view, this was probably all for the best, as what Willis has built from the ruins, in the form of the American Free Press and the Barnes Review, is far superior to what he was doing beforehand.

Those are the facts -- the set of activists which gather around American Renaissance, combined with several figures from the faileo-conservative movement, and the clique that gathers around David Duke and Stormfront, fought Willis through at least two of the three organizations he founded in the 1980s and 1990s, stole them, got very little for their troubles, and ran the organizations they stole into the ground. In doing so, they apparently learned vital skills, such as how to profit from a mailing list, and were able to use this to support American Renaissance and Stormfront, to this day.

Now, one can debate whether they all knew each other before they conspired against Willis, or whether they met each other while conspiring against Willis, but I think some collaboration and linkage beforehand was almost certain. Over the years, Willis embarassed the Liberty Lobby by publishing insufficiently substantiated allegations that individuals plotting against him were on the ADL's payroll, but given how often Willis has been right, and the direction this group has attempted to take the white movement, inviting Chibrews like Marcus Epstein into leadership positions, conducting dialogues with Jewish homosexuals, and bringing in a substantial element of child pornographers and child molestors, like Kevin Strom and Joe Fields, maybe Willis has been right all along -- and projects like Stormfront and American Renaissance really are elaborate Jewish front organizations.

The icing on the cake appears to be the 2004 New Orleans protocols, when all the soon to be washed up comprising leaders of the "far right" gathered in New Orleans for a David Duke "we forgive you for stealing from us" party, and signed the New Orleans protocols, where they agreed to no longer fight among themselves. Willis was invited to attend, and did attend, and that is somewhat sad, because the people he was bargaining with were the same organized, sneaky, cultish clique that had stolen from him every project he attempted to build over the past two decades.

With all this history behind him, I wonder if Willis isn't a bit like Pastor Richard Butler used to be -- a kind, older man who has developed the bad habit of trusting every unworthy white trash criminal that's sulked into his compound. Willis dedicated decades of his life to uniting people who entered his organizations with the intent of stealing from them everything they could get their hands on, and if I had to make an educated guess as to the nemesis who directed these activites, it would be Willis' erstwhile friend David Duke. One of my first impressions of David was meeting him at an event in Richmond, Virginia, just before he went to prison. Ron Doggett organized the event, and paid $600 for the room. Right after the speeches, David got up, said that Doggett had paid $800 for the room, and passed a hat around asking everyone to help pay Ron back. The hat was passed twice before the $800 was raised. It has always been my presumption -- perhaps Ron could tell me differently -- that David pocketed the $200 difference between Ron's actual costs and the costs of the room. I also recall David made repeated references to his "good friend" Kevin Alfred Strom. It was the zenith of the Duke revivalist effort, where Duke was negotiating with Strom for control of the National Alliance, Strom and most of his supporters had not been outed as pedophiles, or ousted from the National Alliance, and Duke's homosexual(*) roommate, Jamie Kelso, had not yet left him. Seeing Duke in the glory of petty hucksterdom, and studying, later, his record of movement scams, it became clear to me that Duke was the exact type of man who could smile to your face while stabbing you in the back, and my personal view is that his "friendly" dealings with Willis is and have always been precisely along these lines.

(*on the issue of Kelso's bizarre sexuality, I recently received an eye witness account from someone who recently attended a multi-day event with Kelso about Kelso's orientation that says, in the most generous light, that Kelso is mentally ill and has rarely ever even spoken to a woman as a woman, while providing strong circumstance that he is homosexual. I cannot tell the story yet, becaue the author has not yet formally broken with Stormfront and is still deciding how to best present the story to others online.)

So, having read "Willis Carto and the American Far Right," some holes have been filled in my understanding of the politics of the movement prior to my arrival earlier this decade. I have always wondered how people can profess friendship with Willis and sit down at dinner with his arch-enemies, and I've always wondered who has been right in these movement disputes that have enveloped Carto. My conclusion, which will probably annoy some of our readers, is that Willis has been the victim of repeated scams and smear campaigns by the same organized group of hucksters, pedophiles and homosexuals that have subjected myself, Alex Linder, and every other white activists outside their clique to smear campaigns -- with the difference being that Willis was kind enough to let them in and give them a position where they could steal from him, and I and others have not. Whether they have done so as deliberate agents of Jewish organizations, and whether Stormfront and American Renaissance are deliberate Jewish fronts, I leave up to the reader.

And will append my analysis with this:

Nothing I say here is intended to excuse the relationships that have developed between Willis' organizations and other known conmen, of which the Iranian Jew Peymon Mottahedeh is probably an exemplar, though there are many, many others. If I can find any fault in Willis, it is that he appears to be extremely uncritical of the company he keeps, again following along the lines of Pastor Butler and his Aryan Nations.
