Young, Gay Asian Elected Mayor of California Town

CAMPBELL, Calif. — Twenty-six-year-old Evan Low became America’s youngest Asian American mayor after being elected in the city of Campbell, where 70 percent of the city’s population of 40,000 are white and 14 percent are Asian. According to Sing Tao Daily, Low's campaign emphasized the importance of ensuring equalilty through increased governmental transparency. Low said that being Asian, young, and gay are all parts of his identity and he believes that everyone is born equal regardless of skin color, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

Low is a fifth-generation Chinese American. In 2006, 23-year-old Low was the youngest Chinese American public official after being elected as a Campbell councilmember. He graduated from San Jose State University, majoring in political science and will receive his Master's degree in public service from Harvard this year.
