July 6, 2006 - (New York City) More than 100 New York area residents took the Oath of Allegiance and became United States citizens onboard the USS Intrepid during a ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Dr. Emilio Gonzalez, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), administered the Oath. U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales also welcomed the new citizens. This week, 18,000 new American citizens will be welcomed during "Celebrate Citizenship, Celebrate America" ceremonies. The new Americans hail from over 40 countries, including Uruguay, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Philippines, and Albania. USCIS expects to welcome more than 600,000 U.S. citizens during naturalization ceremonies this year.
