Israel protests burning of Israeli flags in Italy rally

Rome (dpa) - Israel demanded an official apology from Italy on Wednesday, a day after left-wing extremists burned Israeli flags during a demonstration in Milan celebrating the 61st anniversary of the country's liberation from fascism.
In a statement, Israel's ambassador to Italy, Ehud Gol, said he had been filled with "anger and shame" at the sight of the "fascist behaviour of left-wing extremists who had profaned" the anniversary "by burning Israeli flags during Milan's rally."
Noting that the incident took place on the day that Israel commemorated the Holocaust, Gol said he now expected an official apology from Italy.
Reports said a small group of extremists trampled and burned two Israeli flags and yelled anti-Israeli slogans on the sidelines of Tuesday's Liberation Day commemorative march, which was also attended by former World War II partisans and Jewish survivors.
"These people, along with those who deny the Holocaust (ever happened) and call for the destruction of the State of Israel are a danger for western democracy," Gol said.
Prime Minister-in-waiting Romano Prodi, who had already apologised on behalf of his centre-left coalition on Tuesday, once again "strongly condemned" the episode on Wednesday.
He was flanked by Communist Refoundation leader Fausto Bertinotti, who said the presence of party militants at the April 25th rally was "incompatible" with the burning of flags.
Bertinotti, who is set to become the next speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, had previously sought to distance himself from party officials who continue to refuse to recognise Israel's right to exist.
Communist Refoundation is traditionally close to the Palestinian cause.
"But we also consider equally important the recognition and the respect of Israel and its future," Bertinotti said Wednesday.
Italian Jewish leaders said the while most of the participants had turned against the extremists, such acts betrayed barely concealed anti-Semitic feelings that continue to be present in Italian society.
According to a survey carried out by Eurispes two years ago, a third of Italians are seen as potentially anti-Semitic because of their view that "Jews secretly control (the world's) economy and finances as well as the media."

It's good to see that Italians(after over 1000 years of learning) still have a few intelligent enough people left to sense that Jews are a destructive force in their country:)

Exactly. Israel is what destroys democracy, because obviously most people aren't jews and wouldn't vote to always put Israel first unless they were brainwashed into self-destruct mode. And that is why all politicians running for office are always Zionist, and "vote to abolish Israel" is never on the ballot, because apparently everybody isn't in self destruct mode, quite yet.

These people generally object to Israel because it is a jewish, nationalist state that is "oppressive" and racist!:rolleyes: These people are not anti-semites as the Jews like to say and some here want to believe.
