New Wave of African Invaders Reach Italian Island

Boats carrying at least 370 illegal invaders from Africa, have arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa. The first vessel reached the island two nights ago, carrying about 170 non-Whites, after evading air and sea patrols.

At least two more boats were later intercepted, with more than 200 invaders on board. Lampedusa, between Sicily and North Africa, is a major route into Europe for African invaders, traveling in often rickety boats. Many perish on the way. Last month, some 500 invaders arrived on the island, in one of the largest such landings.

The latest arrivals included dozens of women. Some of the passengers said that they had been traveling for four days without food and water. Many have been taken to a holding centre, others are due to be flown to the Italian mainland.

In 2005 more than 200 boats were intercepted off Lampedusa, with almost 22,000 people on board.
