Perhaps you are correct on this matter. I see it as a fixation of some sort and it may well be an anal retentive fixation. Anal retentive means to withhold ones feces; to fear losing ones excrement. As I remember, according to the Freudian concept toddlers typically go through a stage where they identify their feces as a part of themselves, thus feeling that excreting amounts to the loss of one’s self, a loss of one’s essence. If they are traumatized curing this period such loss becomes permanently phobic in nature exhibiting itself as a sort of miserly attitude of not wanting to lose any of their material state. Depending on the level of phobia the anal retentive person focuses on this possibility of loss and becomes quite detail oriented with any loss of what might be perceived as personal even when such loss is not of a personal nature. Thus we get popular terms “tight ass” or “anal retentive” as the concept of an individual who is unwilling to let go of anything, even that which dead and decayed or no longer of any use to the individual. I have long been chagrined by “pop psychology” and it’s attendant terminology, with terms like “anal”, “anal retentive”, “paranoid” or more recently “ADD” being used to denote anyone to whom the accuser feels justified. It is this labeling that has become such a problem in our society and is used so effectively to slander and defame individuals. Look at the non-psychological terminology that currently pushes such hot buttons; terms like “hater”, “bigot”, “white supremacist”, “Nazi” and the like. People will say: “but what about terms like “nigger”, “kike”, “wop”, “chink” and the like, isn’t this the same type of hateful terminology?” But in fact it is not the same; such terms are not the same at all. Such terms first and foremost have no legal or moral implications for those so identified, as they simply derisively denote a specific racial genotype and nothing more. One would (and typically does) feel the same towards those racial genotypes no matter what they are called, whether it be “negro”, “nigger”, “black”, “Afro-American” or whatever. No one was ever fired for being a “nigger”, no one was ever persecuted for being a “kike”. Such peoples were singled out and identified due to their racially oriented proclivities. The Negro was singled out for being lazy, indolent and worthless as a worker due to the observed traits of their racial group. The jew was likewise to observed to be cunning, ruthless, miserly, vindictive and racially hostile and was shunned for these traits no matter what term was applied. However “hater”, although typically white, is not used to denote any particular racial heritage; instead it denotes a specific type of person and thus is a true form of slander and defamation. Why is “hater” slanderous while “nigger” is not? Simply because terms, like “hater”, “bigot”, and “Nazi”, are used to defame and destroy a person. No one can identify a “hater” or “bigot” by their appearance; such traits must be assessed or more importantly applied by others. Today one can be legally damaged in the loss of their jobs or their house or other material assets simply because someone uses these types of labels. Thus these terms are used not invectives aimed to derisively denote a certain racial genotype, but instead are used as a weapon to defame and destroy people. While the terms like “nigger” or “kike” strikes no fear into the hearts of those to whom such terms are applied, terms like “hater”, “bigot” or “Nazi” do strike fear into the hearts of those to whom such slanderous invectives are leveled. For once these terms are successfully applied, the individual knows they will soon start to suffer very real material losses. If this seems a bit of a stretch, then you may want to go back and review just how many politicians and other high profile people’s careers have been destroyed using this very method of slander and defamation. It is much the same with the pop psychology terms, but on a lesser level. These pop-psych terms are typically not used as weapons; however one should never be cavalier in the use of any such labels.

Local schools, armed forces recruiters walk fine line in working together

year and has yet to sign a recruit. He says it’s harder to recruit in more affluent schools where students tend to go straight to college after graduation. Ahsley plans to go to college to become a doctor or a veterinarian. She doesn’t think her father would let her go into the military.

Marine Sgt. Daniel Blackwell wishes he could recruit in a three-piece suit.

He would walk into a class, tell the students about everything his employer has to offer, all the benefits, all the opportunities and ask the class to raise their hands if they were interested. He expects a classroom full of raised hands.

Doing the exact same thing in his Marine uniform produces almost opposite results.

“When they see the uniform, they have a preconceived notion of what the armed services are all about,” Blackwell said. “But there are 2 million people in the armed services right now. It’s got to be good somewhere.”

As a recruiter for the Marines, Blackwell visits various schools in the area and talks to 50-60 students a day. The one-on-one contact with students is a very effective recruiting tool, he said.

“A lot of these kids wouldn’t know what a Marine would look like,” Blackwell said. “The best way to understand what the Marine Corps can do for you is from a Marine himself.”

Many school officials are very particular about what military recruiters can and cannot do within the schools.

Dan Poggiali, Sandusky High School principal, wants students to know the military is an option, but doesn’t want recruiters persuading any students.

“We ask them not to go out into the main cafeteria where the kids are seated. The kids can come to them if they have an interest, rather than them approaching the students,” Poggiali said. “You don’t want it to be a high-pressure game. Some students don’t want to be approached by recruiters
and their parents don’t want them to be approached either.”

Blackwell isn’t interested in pressuring students, either. He wants students who want to be there.

“We don’t directly go out and solicit anything. It’s an all-volunteer force, and for me to go out and have to force interest isn’t right,” Blackwell said. “Having someone show interest and then explain it to them makes them want to be in it that much more.”

One of the biggest obstacles Blackwell faces as a recruiter is the general public’s misconceptions.

“You have to take into account that, yes, there is a war going on,” Blackwell said. “But a lot of people think that because I am a Marine the only thing I do is run around and kill people, that infantry is the only thing it has to offer.”

In many schools, recruiters are provided with a list of students, said Bellevue Principal Francis Scrunci. Unless a parent calls and asks for their child to be removed from the list, recruiters have their contact information available.

While high school students aren’t necessarily affected, a law called the Solomon Amendment means colleges and universities can lose federal funding if they don’t allow recruiters on campus.

The amendment was passed in 1994 and allows the Secretary of Defense to deny federal grants to colleges and universities if they do not allow ROTC or military recruitment on campus. It was revised twice. In 1999 the amendment
was changed to allow federal financial aid to students even if the school didn’t allow recruiting.

In 2001 the amendment was changed again making it possible that an entire university would lose its federal funding if any of its schools blocked access to recruiters.

The amendment has an exception for religious schools whose beliefs and traditions are based on peace.

The provost of Hibbing Community College said Thursday he’ll decide in about a week whether to suspend the school’s football program because of the players’ poor academic performance.

The players’ combined grade-point average during the past five years is 1.8 on a 4-point scale, said Ken Simberg, provost of the Iron Range school. Athletes in other sports at the two-year college have a combined 2.6 GPA, he said.

And among the 63 football players who started the season, only 13 ended the semester with a GPA higher than 2.0 — a C average or better.

While the provost maintains the issue is academics, some have suggested that race is a factor. About 80 percent of this school year’s players are black, and almost all of them are from out of state.

About 60 people turned out for a forum on the future of the team Thursday afternoon, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Simberg said that if he suspends the program, staff members, faculty and administrators would then consider strategies that could revive the 84-year-old program, perhaps after a year.

“One thing I know is that this will affect people’s lives,” Simberg said. “I lose sleep over it. But we are an academic institution.”

Some players, faculty and community members said at the forum that suspending the program would harm diversity efforts and take away an important second chance for some of the players.

“A lot of people came from all across the United States to play football here,” said Branden Bailey, a football freshman from Atlanta. “A lot of us don’t do good at academics, but sometimes people need a second chance. Where I come from, either you sell drugs or you do something athletic-wise. Please don’t take it (football) away, because I don’t want to go home and sell drugs.”

Football coach Kurt Zuidmulder defended his program.

“In my heart, this is more of a diversity issue, not an academic issue” he said.

But Simberg insisted the issue is education, not race. He said school officials are concerned that student-athletes enroll simply to play football and then leave with loans to pay off and no marketable skills.

The football team finished the season with 48 players — 45 freshman and three sophomores. About eight of the original 63 were removed for disciplinary reasons, and another five or six left after black student-athletes were accused of rape, Zuidmulder said.

Four players were charged in that case, which involved the alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old high school student in a dormitory. Their cases are still pending.

This past fall’s roster included only three players from Minnesota, Simberg said. Over the past five years, 76 percent of football players came to Hibbing from other states, he said. During the same period, 32 percent of the men’s basketball players and 13 percent of women’s basketball players came from other states.

Aaron Brown, a speech and communications instructor, said he agrees that “the status quo in our football program cannot be tolerated.” Still, he also said the college owes it to the players to set clear academic accountability standards.

One attendee who was the man who intervened when Mr. Taylor was being roughly escorted into the hallway was Jon Goldberg of the Atlantic Jewish Council in Halifax.

Mr. Goldberg acknowledged he’s familiar with Mr. Taylor’s views, which he finds abhorrent. He said the protesters were wrong to physically usher the speaker out of the meeting room.
