Roman generals who disgraced themselves by losing would often throw themselves on their swords. I don't know if there was any particular ritual involved. I would hope so; a sword stab to the gut really isn't much differrent from seppuku. A very slow, painful way to die. Having someone close at hand to cut your head off to end your suffering sounds rather civilized, rather than letting the poor fellow writhe and wriggle in agony on the ground for a few hours while he bled to death.

In modern times in the West, when the officer corps was still heavily aristocratic, it wasn't unknown for officers who had disgraced themselves to shoot themselves, or to have a loaded pistol handed to them with the heavy hint that they should shoot themselves (I believe Ernst Roehm was given a loaded pistol to shoot himself after he was arrested, according to accounts I read; he did not take the hint). No ritual, though. More of a social convention that wasn't universally held to.

the Japanese are not invading our shores/borders wholesale. I don't have much animosity toward them. Some of their customs and culture are facinating. I think their culture is endangered much like ours. Their economy is based on consumption and increasingly their industrial base is moving to China. They have no more land to expand to and Russia still controls the Sakalin Islands which rightfully belong to Japan. The modern egalitarian/jewish world threatens THEIR existance too!

I have a lot of respect for the Japanese and their culture. It was much less degenerate than ours, if absolutely inferior, when it became contaminated with our culture. Unfortunately Japan has been heavily Westernised/Americanised. I wonder if anyone reading this knows a lot about their history and could outline how they diverged from the Chinese.

I know that they have more Polynesian blood than the more pure-race Chinese. Sorry for using the word MORE so much I wont do it any...again.

I'd argue that Jap culture is probably one of the refined in the world. Killing yourself is a way of saving honor because the shame of defeat is unbearable.

Brutus, Cassius, Nero, Seneca, and Cato -- many Romans committed suicide and Stoics and Epicureans both condoned it.
