Whites and the “Native American” Thing

If I had a nickel for every time some White person said, “I’m 1/4 Cherokee” (or similar Indian tribe), I’d have a large bank account.

      Yes, the noble “red man.”

Read Mark Twain’s essay on the noble “red man.”

The sombitches would literally skin children alive.

What has destroyed the pride in being White? Christianity? The Third Reich? Jews? Chinese? Illuminati?

I would vote for liberals (Christians of the twentieth century) and Jews (always jealous of Europeans).

The Third Reich made some mistakes (in hindsight) but what a glorious moment! Glorious!

In one of my “beach” novels, this summer, the hero protects a young researcher from some horror they have discovered by giving her a Navaho dreamcatcher. To allay his own terror of this strange machine, he practices Zen. Basically, any religious or cultural artifact is beneficial, as long as it’s not western.

Seems like starting in the 20s, all American lit is saturated with the theme of White Protestant culture being good for nothing. An old newspaper editorial from my high school days blamed Sinclair Lewis (“Babbit,” “Main Street”) for starting this trend, but practically every novelist up through now, including Canadian Margaret Atwood (“Cat’s Eye”) portrays White culture as joyless.

Novels don’t have to be so judgmental. Thomas Wolfe (“Look Homeward, Angel”) is socially critical, but yet includes some of the joy and beauty of White culture. “Gone with the Wind” presents both sides of the Old South.

If someone finds out they have some Injun blood they will brag about it like crazy. But if they find out there’s a nigger in the family tree they are so embarrassed and ashamed that they will never even admit it to themselves, let alone to anyone else.
